Level 3 – Disability and Neglect

This micro skills course will consider the management of disabled children who are at increased risk of abuse and neglect. Healthcare staff coming into contact with children with disability include: paediatricians, GPs, health visitors, community paediatric nurses, therapists – physio, OT and SALT, child psychologists and psychiatrists, paediatric and orthopaedic surgeons, anaesthetists, dentists and others.

What will I learn?

  1. By the end of this session you will be able to:
  2. Identify key features of neglect in a disabled child;
  3. Judge what information on a child and family should be shared with others;
  4. Develop awareness of the local systems and resources available to support a child in need;
  5. Describe the role of the named doctor for child protection in providing support and advice;
  6. Produce a clear report outlining the health needs of a disabled child and the implications for the child of any failure to meet those needs, should you be required to do so
